Burkina Faso's flag: a revolution in red, green and gold

The flag of Burkina Faso is split horizontally into red over green, with a five-pointed yellow star in the middle. Red recalls the revolutionary struggle, green the country's farmland and natural wealth, and the gold star is the guiding light of the revolution. It was adopted on 4 August 1984, when Captain Thomas Sankara renamed the former Upper Volta as Burkina Faso, a name that blends the Mooré and Dioula languages and is usually translated as "land of upright people". The older Upper Volta flag of black, white and red stripes, named after the three branches of the Volta river, was retired at the same time. On our Burkina Faso flag the star sits in the centre, straddling the two bands.

Film, football and the Burkinabè community

Ouagadougou hosts FESPACO, the biggest film festival in Africa, which brings directors and audiences together every two years. On the pitch the Stallions reached the final of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and have been regular tournament qualifiers since. Burkinabè people in the UK and Ireland, and the many British charities with links to the country, fly the flag for Independence Day on 5 August and for big matches.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Burkina Faso flags are available in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft, from £6.99. Take a 5ft x 3ft to a match, or a 3ft x 2ft for an office or church wall. The Flagtex version is printed on light polyester and great value for events; the DuraFlag version is a thicker knit with strong hems for permanent poles, and takes eyelets, clips or rope and toggle.

Burkina Faso bunting

Burkina Faso bunting lines up the red, green and gold star on rectangular flags in 3m and 9m strings, perfect for a fundraiser or a film screening night.

Hand flags and table flags

Burkina Faso hand flags come on wooden sticks in 9x6in and 18x12in. The 6x4in Burkina Faso table flag has a base, and the 18x12in large wooden table flag stands well on a desk. Mali, Ghana and Niger are among our world flags.
