The Westmorland flag: the apple tree on red and white
The Westmorland flag is a white field crossed by two red bars, with a gold apple tree bearing seven apples laid over the whole. The bars and the tree come from the arms granted to Westmorland County Council in 1926, the apple tree being the ancient device of the borough of Appleby, the old county town, and the red and white bars from the county’s older heraldry. When the county was folded into Cumbria in 1974 the design kept going on the Westmorland Association’s banners and the county show, and it was registered with the Flag Institute as the county flag in 2011. It now flies again from the offices of Westmorland and Furness Council in Kendal, and our Westmorland flag is that registered design in the full size range.
Westmorland Day, 29 September
Westmorland Day is 29 September, Michaelmas, and the apple tree goes up that day on town halls, schools and pubs from Appleby to Ambleside. The flag also flies for the Westmorland County Show at Crooklands in September, Appleby Horse Fair in June, Grasmere Sports and Ambleside Sports in the summer, the Kendal Mountain Festival in November, Kendal Calling at Lowther Deer Park, the Kirkby Stephen and Brough shows, the Windermere steamers and the Lakes regatta, the Settle–Carlisle line at Kirkby Stephen, Kendal Town at Parkside Road, the Lowther Show and the Shap Fell climb, and Rydal and Grasmere on Wordsworth days. The historic county runs from the Eden to Windermere, so Penrith’s south side, Kirkby Lonsdale and Sedbergh fly it too. The events calendar keeps the dates.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The flag comes in 20x12in for a hand pole or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall, a boat on Windermere or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a campsite, and 8ft x 5ft for a showground, a castle or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for a show day or the 29th; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and double stitching, which is the one to pick for a fell-side pole that takes Lakeland rain and wind all year. Both grades are eyeleted, and the DuraFlag can be ordered with rope and toggle for a halyard.
Westmorland bunting
Westmorland bunting repeats the apple tree on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a bar, a tea room or a classroom, nine metres runs the length of a village hall, a marquee or a show pen, and two or three strings tied together will cross Appleby’s Boroughgate or Kendal’s Stricklandgate for the day.
Hand flags and table flags
Westmorland hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for a parade, a school or the sports field at Grasmere. On the desk there is the Westmorland table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a mayor’s parlour or a dinner. Cumberland, Lancashire, Yorkshire and County Durham are under county flags.
