The Northumberland flag: red and gold of the old kingdom
The Northumberland flag is a field of eight vertical bars in red and gold, counterchanged so that each bar is split across the middle, red over gold and gold over red. It is one of the oldest designs in English heraldry: Bede wrote in the eighth century of a banner of gold and purple hung over the tomb of King Oswald at Bamburgh, and the red and gold bars were attributed to the kings of Northumbria by later heralds. The banner was granted to Northumberland County Council in 1951 and registered with the Flag Institute as the county flag in 1995, and it is flown from County Hall in Morpeth, from the castles at Alnwick and Bamburgh and on the roadside signs as you cross the Tyne or the border. Our Northumberland flag is that registered pattern, held in the full size range and both grades.
Northumberland Day, 25 May
Northumberland Day is 25 May, with the flag on civic buildings, schools, churches and pubs from Berwick to Blyth and the Northumberland County Show at Bywell over the late May bank holiday. Through the year it flies at the Alnwick, Glendale and Bellingham shows, the Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering, the Hexham Abbey festival, the Kielder marathon and dark-sky weekends, the Amble puffin festival, the Bamburgh and Warkworth castle events, the Hadrian’s Wall path and the Pennine Way, Lindisfarne at low tide and the Farne Islands boats, and at Blyth Spartans and Morpeth Town. The historic county runs south to the Tyne, so Newcastle, North Shields, Wallsend and Tynemouth fly it as well. The events calendar keeps the dates.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The flag comes in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a caravan, and 8ft x 5ft for a castle, a showground or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for the show or the 25th; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and double stitching for a coastal or Cheviot pole that flies the bars through a Northumbrian winter. Both have eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be ordered with rope and toggle for a halyard. There is also a Northumberland windsock for a caravan, a campsite or a garden pole.
Northumberland bunting
Northumberland bunting repeats the red and gold bars on every pennant in 3m, 5m, 9m and 20m lengths, in rectangular or triangular pennants. Three metres dresses a bar or a classroom, nine metres runs along a village hall or a pavilion, and the 20m length will cross Alnwick market place or Morpeth high street for Northumberland Day.
Hand flags and table flags
Northumberland hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for a parade, a school or the showground. On the desk there is the Northumberland table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a mayor’s parlour or a dinner. County Durham, Cumberland, Yorkshire and the Scottish Borders are under county flags.
