Red and gold alternate in eight upright bars on the Northumberland flag, and each bar changes colour halfway down, so the two colours swap places along a line through the centre.
It is one of the oldest designs in English heraldry: Bede wrote of a banner of gold and purple raised over the tomb of St Oswald, king of Northumbria, and later heralds turned this into the red and gold bars borne by Northumberland County Council and registered as the county flag.
It flies on Northumberland Day in May, at Bamburgh, Alnwick and Hexham, at Newcastle Falcons and county cricket, and in gardens along the coast from Berwick to Blyth.
