The Merionethshire flag: three goats and the sun

The Merionethshire flag shows three white goats rearing on a blue field, with gold horns and hooves, and a gold sun bursting from the lower corner at the hoist. The goats are the wild goats of the Rhinogydd and Cadair Idris, the hardest country in Wales, and they come from the county’s traditional arms; the sun rising over the mountains stands for the Mawddach and the Dyfi coast facing west into Cardigan Bay. Merioneth was folded into Gwynedd in 1974, but the goats never stopped flying at Dolgellau, the old county town, and the banner is now flown as the flag of the historic county. Our Merionethshire flag is that design in both grades.

St David’s Day and the Merioneth year

The goats fly beside the Red Dragon on St David’s Day, 1 March, in Dolgellau, Bala, Harlech, Barmouth and Tywyn. Through the year the flag goes up for the Merioneth County Show at Harlech in August, Sesiwn Fawr in Dolgellau in July, the Bala Lake and Llyn Tegid regattas, the Barmouth harbour festival and the Three Peaks yacht race, the Ffestiniog and Talyllyn railways, the Aberdyfi lifeboat days, Portmeirion, the Race the Train at Tywyn, the Ras y Gader hill race up Cadair Idris, the slate caverns at Blaenau Ffestiniog, Harlech Castle, the Mawddach Trail and Coed y Brenin, the Eisteddfod when it comes to the county, and on farm and chapel poles from Corwen to Aberdyfi. The events calendar keeps the dates.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Merionethshire flags are held in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall, a boat at Barmouth or a short mast, and 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a campsite. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for a show weekend or St David’s Day; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and double stitching, the one for a Cardigan Bay pole that takes Atlantic weather all year. Both have eyelets, and the DuraFlag is also made with rope and toggle for a halyard. The 8ft x 5ft size is not carried for this county.

Merionethshire bunting

Merionethshire bunting repeats the goats and sun on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres does a bar, a café or a classroom, nine metres runs along a village hall, a chapel vestry or a harbour railing, and a few strings joined will cross Eldon Square in Dolgellau or the high street in Bala for the show.

Hand flags and table flags

Merionethshire hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for a parade, a school or the Harlech showground. On the desk there is the Merionethshire table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, an eisteddfod top table or a dinner. Caernarfonshire, Denbighshire, Montgomeryshire and Cardiganshire are under county flags.
