The Essex flag: three seaxes on red

The Essex flag carries three white seaxes, the notched Saxon short swords, one above another on a red field, each with a gold hilt and the blade pointing to the fly. The arms were attributed by the heralds to the old Kingdom of the East Saxons, and they were granted in that form to Essex County Council in 1932, so the same three blades sit on the council badge, on Essex cricket’s crest at Chelmsford and on the signs at every county boundary from the Lea to the Stour. The design is listed by the Flag Institute as the traditional county flag and flies from County Hall in Chelmsford, and our Essex flag is that pattern across the whole size range.

Essex Day, 26 October

Essex Day falls on 26 October, the feast of St Cedd who brought Christianity to the East Saxons from his chapel at Bradwell-on-Sea, and the seaxes are flown that day on civic buildings, schools and pubs from Harlow to Harwich. Through the year the flag goes up for the Tendring Hundred Show, the Orsett Show and the Essex Young Farmers’ show, Colchester United at the Community Stadium and Southend at Roots Hall, Essex cricket at the Cloud County Ground, the Maldon mud race on New Year’s Day, the Clacton airshow in August, the Dunmow Flitch trials, Southend pier and the seafront at Walton and Frinton, the Thames barges at Maldon and Brightlingsea, Colchester Castle and Audley End, and for Saffron Walden, Epping and the villages of the Rodings on jubilees and coronations. The historic county runs to the Lea and the Thames, so the seaxes also fly in Romford, Barking, Ilford and Walthamstow. The events calendar has the dates.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Essex flags are stocked in 20x12in for a hand pole or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall, a dinghy or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden or telescopic pole and 8ft x 5ft for a cricket ground, a yacht club or a fixed pole of 20ft or more. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade that suits a show weekend or a match; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and double stitching for an estuary or seafront pole that takes the wind off the North Sea all year. Both grades come with eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be had with rope and toggle to run up a halyard. There is also an Essex windsock for a caravan at Mersea or Clacton, a beach hut or a garden pole.

Essex bunting

Essex bunting carries the seaxes on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m string does a bar or a classroom, 9m runs the length of a village hall, a cricket pavilion or a scout hut, and several strings joined end to end will cross a high street in Maldon or Saffron Walden for Essex Day.

Hand flags and table flags

Essex hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for a parade, a school sports day or the Chelmsford crowd. For the desk there is the Essex table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a parish meeting or a dinner. Kent, Suffolk, Hertfordshire and Middlesex are under county flags.

Essex flag FAQs

What is on the Essex flag?

Three white seaxes with gold hilts, one above another, on a red field. The seax is the Saxon short sword, and the arms are those attributed to the Kingdom of the East Saxons.

Why do the seaxes have a notch in the blade?

The notch is a heraldic convention for the seax that has been drawn that way for centuries; it is part of the design on the county arms and is kept on the flag.

When is Essex Day?

26 October, the feast of St Cedd, the seventh-century bishop of the East Saxons whose chapel still stands at Bradwell-on-Sea.

Does the flag cover Romford, Barking and Ilford?

Yes. The historic county of Essex runs to the River Lea, so the seaxes belong to the London boroughs on the Essex side as much as to Chelmsford or Colchester.

Which size for a garden flagpole?

A 5ft x 3ft fits a 6m garden or telescopic pole, 3ft x 2ft suits a shorter pole or a boat, and 8ft x 5ft is for a fixed pole of 20ft or more.

Is there an Essex windsock?

Yes, an Essex windsock with the three seaxes for a caravan, a beach hut or a garden pole.

How quickly will Essex flags arrive?

Everything in the Essex range is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse; orders placed by 2pm leave the same day with free 1–2 day UK delivery.
