The Yorkshire flag: the white rose on blue

The Yorkshire flag is the White Rose of York, a five-petalled heraldic rose with gold seeds and green sepals, set on a light blue field. The rose has been the county’s badge since the House of York carried it in the fifteenth century, and the blue field was in use by the Yorkshire Ridings Society by the 1960s, but the design was only registered with the Flag Institute on 29 July 2008 when the Society fixed the shade of blue and the angle of the rose. That registered version is our Yorkshire flag; the Yorkshire Old flag is the earlier pattern that was flown before the design was standardised, which plenty of long-standing flagpoles across the county still carry and which some prefer precisely because it is the one they grew up with.

Yorkshire Day, 1 August

Yorkshire Day was started in 1975 by the Yorkshire Ridings Society as a protest at the 1974 county boundary changes, and the date was chosen because 1 August is the anniversary of the Battle of Minden in 1759, when Yorkshire regiments picked white roses from the hedgerows and wore them in their hats. It is now a civic occasion with a different host town each year, declarations read at the four Bars of York, church services, rose-wearing and flags on every council building, pub and school. The rest of the calendar runs through the Great Yorkshire Show at Harrogate in July, Test cricket and the Roses match at Headingley, Super League derbies, the Tour de Yorkshire legacy rides, Whitby Regatta, the Ebor meeting at York and, for the diaspora, any Yorkshire society dinner from London to Sydney. A Yorkshire Day page gathers the event ideas each summer.

The three Ridings

Yorkshire’s historic thirds each have a registered flag of their own. The North Riding flag and the West Riding flag each set the white rose on their own registered field so the three are told apart at a glance, and the East Riding has its own page under East Riding of Yorkshire flags. All three come in the same sizes as the county flag, with matching bunting, hand flags and table flags for town councils, agricultural shows and the villages that still think of themselves as Riding rather than district.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The Yorkshire flag is held in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. Flagtex is the woven-polyester print for Yorkshire Day, the show ring and the beer garden; Flagtex Nylon is the lighter option that lifts in a weak breeze on an exposed moorland pole; DuraFlag is the heavy knitted grade with double-stitched hems for the pole outside a cricket club or a town hall that flies the rose all year. Eyelets are fitted as standard, and the DuraFlag can be supplied with a rope and toggle for a traditional halyard.

Yorkshire bunting

Yorkshire bunting is the big-seller every July: rectangular pennants showing the full rose-on-blue in 3m, 5m, 9m, 12m and 20m lengths, a triangle cut in the same colours for a village-fete look, and a giant 18.25m length with oversized pennants for a high street or a show marquee. The Yorkshire Old bunting is in 3m and 9m, and the North Riding and West Riding bunting in the same two lengths. A 9m run covers a pub frontage; a 20m length crosses a market square twice.

Hand flags, car flags and table flags

Yorkshire hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for the parade and the Headingley terrace, and the Yorkshire car flag clips on a window for the drive to the match. The Yorkshire table flag with base is the 6x4in desk flag for a council chamber, a pub bar or a Yorkshire Day dinner, with the satin table flag on a chrome base for an office reception. The Yorkshire windsock suits a campsite or a narrowboat, and the Yorkshire Born and Proud of It flag says what it says. Lancashire, Durham, Northumberland and the rest are under county flags.

Yorkshire flag FAQs

What is the Yorkshire flag?

A white rose with gold seeds and green sepals on a light blue field. It was registered with the Flag Institute on 29 July 2008 after the Yorkshire Ridings Society standardised a design that had been in use since the 1960s.

What is the difference between the Yorkshire New and Yorkshire Old flags?

The Yorkshire New flag is the design registered with the Flag Institute in 2008. The Yorkshire Old flag is the earlier pattern flown before the Yorkshire Ridings Society standardised the colour and the rose; both have been flown for decades, and the registered one is the official county flag.

When is Yorkshire Day?

1 August every year. It commemorates the Battle of Minden in 1759 and has been celebrated since 1975, with a different host town each year, civic declarations and flags on public buildings across the county.

Is the white rose the same as the Yorkshire cricket and rugby badges?

They all descend from the White Rose of York, but the clubs use their own stylised versions. The county flag uses the plain heraldic rose with gold seeds and green sepals, which is what the Flag Institute registered.

Do you have flags for the Ridings?

Yes: the North Riding and West Riding flags are on this page in every format, and the East Riding of Yorkshire flag has its own collection.

What size Yorkshire flag for a house flagpole?

5ft x 3ft on a 6m garden or telescopic pole, 3ft x 2ft on anything shorter and 8ft x 5ft only on a fixed pole of 20ft or more. Choose DuraFlag if it is staying up all year on the moors.

Can I get Yorkshire bunting for a whole street for Yorkshire Day?

The 20m and giant 18.25m lengths are made for exactly that; three 20m lengths criss-cross a typical terraced street. Everything is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse, same day before 2pm, so a late order still arrives for the first.
