The Worcestershire flag: the black pears and the Severn
The Worcestershire flag carries three black pears above a wavy line for the Severn, which runs the length of the county from Bewdley through Worcester to Upton and Tewkesbury. The black pear has been Worcestershire’s badge since Tudor times, by tradition from Elizabeth I’s visit to Worcester in 1575, and it is on the arms of the city, the county council and the county cricket club. The flag was chosen in a public competition and registered with the Flag Institute in 2013, and it now flies from County Hall and the Guildhall in Worcester. That registered design is our Worcestershire flag; the Worcestershire Old flag is the earlier arms-based design flown before 2013, held in the full size range with a matching table flag for anyone matching an existing display.
Where the pears fly
The flag is out for the Royal Three Counties Show at Malvern in June, Upton Jazz and the Upton Blues Festival, the Worcester Festival in August, the British Asparagus Festival in the Vale of Evesham, the Pershore Plum Festival, the Hanbury and Bromyard shows, Worcester Regatta on the Severn, the Victorian Christmas Fayre in the city and the cricket at New Road, with civic poles in Worcester, Kidderminster, Bromsgrove, Redditch, Droitwich, Evesham and Malvern flying it through the year. The historic county also takes in Dudley, Stourbridge and Halesowen, where the pears are flown alongside the Black Country flag. The events calendar keeps the dates.
Sizes, grades and fittings
Both the registered and the Old flag are held in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole, a pub or a float, and 8ft x 5ft for the county ground, a council building or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for the show, the festival and a cricket week; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems for a pole on the Malvern ridge or beside the river that flies the pears all year. Whichever grade you pick it comes with eyelets, and the DuraFlag has a rope and toggle option for a halyard.
Worcestershire bunting
Worcestershire bunting repeats the pears and the Severn on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a shop door or a classroom, nine metres runs along a village hall or the river frontage of a pub, and several lengths joined end to end cross a high street for the festival or the regatta.
Hand flags and table flags
Worcestershire hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for the show ring, New Road and a school parade. For the desk there is the Worcestershire table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a club dinner or a hotel reception, with the Old pattern table flag alongside. Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Shropshire and the Black Country are under county flags.
Worcestershire flag FAQs
What is on the Worcestershire flag?
Three black pears, the county’s badge since Tudor times, above a wavy line for the River Severn. It was chosen by public competition and registered with the Flag Institute in 2013.
What is the Worcestershire Old flag?
The earlier arms-based design flown around the county before the 2013 registration, stocked in the same sizes and grades with a matching table flag.
Why black pears?
The Worcester Black pear is an old local variety; by tradition a tree laden with them was shown to Elizabeth I on her visit to the city in 1575, and the pears have been on the city’s arms ever since.
Does the flag cover Dudley and Stourbridge?
Yes. Dudley, Stourbridge, Halesowen and Oldbury lie in the historic county of Worcestershire even though they have been administered from the West Midlands since 1974.
Which size for a garden flagpole?

Is Worcestershire bunting available?
Yes, rectangular bunting in 3m and 9m lengths with the pears and the Severn on every pennant.
