The Wiltshire flag: the great bustard on green and white

The Wiltshire flag shows a great bustard, the huge ground-living bird that was hunted out of the county in the nineteenth century and brought back to Salisbury Plain in the 2000s, set on horizontal stripes of green and white. The bustard has been Wiltshire’s emblem since it appeared on the county council’s arms, the green stands for the downland and the white for the chalk beneath it, and the flag was registered with the Flag Institute in 2009. That registered design is our Wiltshire flag; the Wiltshire Old flag is the earlier bustard design flown around the county before registration, stocked as a 5ft x 3ft for anyone matching a flag already on the pole.

Where the bustard flies

The flag is out for the Chippenham Folk Festival at the end of May, WOMAD at Charlton Park, the Salisbury International Arts Festival, the Devizes, Trowbridge and Salisbury carnivals, the Marlborough Mop, the Wiltshire Game and Country Fair, the summer solstice crowd at Stonehenge, the white-horse villages of the Vale of Pewsey on fete day and the County Ground at Swindon on a match day. Civic poles in Trowbridge, Salisbury, Chippenham, Swindon and Devizes fly it through the year, and the army towns around the Plain fly it alongside their regimental colours. The events calendar has the dates.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The Wiltshire flag is held in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole, a pub or a carnival float, and 8ft x 5ft for a county hall, a football ground or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for the festival and carnival season; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems for a pole on the open downland, where the wind has a long run at it. Eyelets come as standard on either grade, and a rope and toggle can be added to the DuraFlag for a halyard.

Wiltshire bunting

Wiltshire bunting repeats the bustard on green and white along rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a shop door or a classroom, nine metres runs along a village hall or a carnival club’s float shed, and several lengths tied end to end cross a market place for the carnival.

Hand flags, table flags and windsock

Wiltshire hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for the carnival route, the Mop and the school parade. For the desk there is the Wiltshire table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a regimental dinner or a hotel reception, with the Old pattern table flag alongside. The Wiltshire windsock is for the campsite, the caravan and the allotment. Somerset, Dorset, Hampshire, Berkshire and Gloucestershire are under county flags.
