The West Sussex flag: martlets under a gold band

The West Sussex flag takes the six gold martlets of Sussex, the footless heraldic swallows set three, two and one on blue, and adds a broad gold band across the top. It is the banner of the arms of West Sussex County Council, the authority created for the western half of the county at Chichester, and the band is what tells it apart from the plain blue Sussex flag and from East Sussex’s red one. The martlets themselves are the arms attributed to the South Saxon kings and the six are often read as the six rapes, Chichester, Arundel and Bramber falling on the western side. The flag flies from County Hall in Chichester and from district offices in Horsham, Crawley and Worthing, and our West Sussex flag is that banner, held in both grades and the full size range.

Sussex Day and the West Sussex year

Sussex Day on 16 June, the feast of St Richard of Chichester, is the big day for the martlets, with flags on the cathedral green, the town halls and the schools from Midhurst to Littlehampton. Through the rest of the year the flag goes up for the South of England Show at Ardingly, the Festival of Speed, Glorious Goodwood and the Revival, the Chichester Festival Theatre season, Crawley Town at Broadfield, Worthing at Woodside Road and Bognor Regis Town at Nyewood Lane, Sussex cricket when it visits Arundel, the Arundel Festival and the castle, Petworth and Parham, the Bognor birdman and the Worthing Birdman, Shoreham harbour and Littlehampton regatta, the Weald and Downland Museum at Singleton, the Amberley Museum, Wakehurst, Gatwick and the villages of the Downs on jubilees and coronations. The events calendar keeps the dates.

Sizes, grades and fittings

West Sussex flags come in 20x12in for a hand pole or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall, a dinghy or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a beach hut, and 8ft x 5ft for a racecourse, a town hall or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade that does a show day or the Sussex Day parade; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade, hemmed and double stitched, for a seafront or Downland pole that flies the martlets through a Channel winter. Both are eyeleted, and the DuraFlag can be supplied with rope and toggle for a halyard.

West Sussex bunting

West Sussex bunting repeats the martlets and the gold band on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m string dresses a bar, a beach hut or a classroom, 9m runs along a village hall, a pavilion or a seafront kiosk, and several strings joined will cross a street in Arundel or Steyning for the day.

Hand flags and table flags

West Sussex hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for a parade, a school or the Goodwood crowd. For the desk there is the West Sussex table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a mayor’s parlour or a dinner. The plain Sussex flag, East Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire are under county flags.
