The Nottinghamshire flag: the cross and the outlaw

The Nottinghamshire flag is a green field carrying a red cross edged in white, with Robin Hood drawing his bow in the top corner beside the hoist. The green is Sherwood Forest, the red cross is the St George’s cross that the county’s towns and regiments have carried for centuries, and the archer is the outlaw the whole world associates with the county. The design was chosen in a public competition run with BBC Radio Nottingham and registered with the Flag Institute in 2011, and it is the flag over County Hall at West Bridgford and the Council House in the Market Square. That registered design is our Nottinghamshire flag; the Nottinghamshire Old flag is the earlier design flown around the county before 2011, stocked as a 5ft x 3ft for anyone matching an existing pole.

Nottinghamshire Day and the county calendar

Nottinghamshire Day brings the flag out on civic buildings, schools and shops each summer, and it stays up for the Robin Hood Festival in Sherwood Forest in August, Goose Fair on the Forest Recreation Ground at the start of October, the Newark and Nottinghamshire County Show in May, Southwell races, the Retford and Worksop charter days, Test cricket and county matches at Trent Bridge, Forest at the City Ground, County at Meadow Lane and Mansfield at Field Mill. The old mining villages along the Erewash and the Leen fly it for their galas and the Trent-side villages hang the bunting for the summer regattas. The events calendar keeps the dates.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The Nottinghamshire flag is held in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole, a pub or a float, and 8ft x 5ft for a cricket ground, a council building or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for Goose Fair week, the show and a Test match; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems for a pole that flies the outlaw all year. Both grades are finished with eyelets; ask for rope and toggle on the DuraFlag if the pole has a halyard.

Nottinghamshire bunting

Nottinghamshire bunting repeats the cross and the archer on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a shop door or a classroom, nine metres runs along a village hall or a cricket pavilion, and several lengths tied end to end cross a market square for Nottinghamshire Day or the fair.

Hand flags, table flags and windsock

Nottinghamshire hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for the Robin Hood Festival, the Trent Bridge terraces and a school parade. On the desk there is the Nottinghamshire table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a club dinner or a reception, with the Old pattern table flag alongside. The Nottinghamshire windsock suits a campsite in Sherwood or a narrowboat on the Trent. Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Yorkshire are under county flags.

Nottinghamshire flag FAQs

What is the Nottinghamshire flag?

A green field with a red cross edged in white and the figure of Robin Hood drawing his bow by the hoist. It was chosen by public competition and registered with the Flag Institute in 2011.

What is the Nottinghamshire Old flag?

The earlier design flown in the county before the 2011 registration, stocked as a 5ft x 3ft with a matching table flag.

Why is Robin Hood on the flag?

Because Sherwood Forest and Nottingham are the heart of the Robin Hood legend, and the public vote that chose the flag wanted the county’s best-known figure on it alongside the traditional cross.

Does the flag cover the city of Nottingham?

Yes. The city is a separate unitary authority but lies within the historic county, and the flag is flown on the Council House as well as on County Hall.

Which size for a garden pole?

For a 6m garden or telescopic pole choose 5ft x 3ft; a shorter pole takes 3ft x 2ft and only a fixed pole of 20ft or more needs the 8ft x 5ft.

Is there Nottinghamshire bunting?

Yes, rectangular bunting in 3m and 9m lengths with the flag on every pennant.

How quickly will Nottinghamshire flags arrive?
