The Isle of Wight flag: the gold diamond over the waves
The Isle of Wight flag is a blue field with a gold diamond riding above white waves, the diamond standing for the shape of the island itself and the waves for the Solent and the Channel that surround it. The design was adopted by the Isle of Wight Council and registered with the Flag Institute in 2009, and it is the flag flown from County Hall in Newport, the Cowes waterfront and the ferry terminals. That registered version is our Isle of Wight flag; the Isle of Wight Old (Castles) flag is the earlier council-style design with castles that was flown before 2009, kept in stock for anyone matching an older pole or wanting the two together. For the water there is the Isle of Wight ensign, a 5ft x 3ft red ensign with the island flag in the fly for a yacht, a rib or a fishing boat out of Yarmouth or Bembridge.
Isle of Wight Day and the island calendar
Isle of Wight Day is marked each September with the flag on public buildings, schools and shops across the island, and the diamond is out for most of the summer before it: the Isle of Wight Festival at Seaclose in June, the Round the Island Race, the Royal Isle of Wight County Show, Cowes Week in August with the fireworks over the Solent, the Garlic Festival at Newchurch, Ryde Carnival, the Ventnor Fringe, the steam show at Havenstreet and the walking and cycling festivals in spring and autumn. Yacht clubs along the Medina and the Solent fly the ensign from the mast, campsites at Whitecliff Bay and Compton fly the windsock, and the hand flags come out for the carnival processions in Ryde, Sandown and Shanklin. The events calendar keeps the dates.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The island flag is stocked in 20x12in for a hand pole, a boat or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole, a pub or a float, and 8ft x 5ft for a yacht club, a council building or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for Cowes Week and the festival season; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems that stands up to a salt wind on an exposed pole at Ventnor or the Needles. Eyelets are fitted to both, with rope and toggle on request for the DuraFlag on a halyard mast.
Isle of Wight bunting
Isle of Wight bunting carries the diamond and waves on each rectangular pennant in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a beach-hut front or a shop door, nine metres runs along a sailing-club balcony or a village hall, and a few lengths joined end to end cross a high street for carnival week.
Hand flags, table flags and windsock
Isle of Wight hand flags come on wooden sticks in 9x6in and a larger 18x12in for the carnival route and the Cowes fireworks. For the desk there is the Isle of Wight table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag, the 18x12in large wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a yacht-club bar or a hotel reception, with the Castles table flag alongside. The Isle of Wight windsock is for the campsite, the caravan and the beach. Hampshire, Dorset and the rest of the south coast are under county flags.
Isle of Wight flag FAQs
What is the Isle of Wight flag?
A gold diamond above white waves on a blue field, the diamond for the island’s shape and the waves for the sea around it. It was adopted by the council and registered with the Flag Institute in 2009.
What is the Isle of Wight Old (Castles) flag?
The earlier design with castles, in the style of the council’s arms, that was flown on the island before the diamond-and-waves flag was registered. It is stocked in the same sizes and grades.
What is the Isle of Wight ensign?
A red ensign with the island flag in the fly, stocked as a 5ft x 3ft for boats and yacht clubs. It is a courtesy and club flag, not a substitute for the legal national ensign a vessel must wear.
When is Isle of Wight Day?
It is held each September, with the flag flown on public buildings, schools and businesses across the island.
Which size for a garden or boat pole?
5ft x 3ft on a 6m garden pole or a yacht-club mast; 3ft x 2ft for a shorter pole or a rib; 8ft x 5ft only on a fixed pole of 20ft or more. Choose DuraFlag for a pole in a salt wind.
Is there Isle of Wight bunting?
Yes, rectangular bunting in 3m and 9m lengths with the diamond and waves on every pennant.
How quickly can it reach the island?
Everything is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse; orders before 2pm leave the same day with free 1–2 day UK delivery, and the island is covered at the standard rate.
