The East Riding flag: the white rose on blue and green

The East Riding of Yorkshire flag is split down the middle, blue at the hoist and green at the fly, with a large white Yorkshire rose over the join. The rose says Yorkshire; the blue is the North Sea and the Humber that bound the Riding on two sides, and the green is the Wolds and the Holderness farmland between them. The design was chosen in a public competition and registered with the Flag Institute as the flag of the East Riding in 2013, and it flies from County Hall in Beverley and from Bridlington, Driffield and Goole. Our East Riding flag is that registered design in both grades and the full size range.

Yorkshire Day and the East Riding year

Yorkshire Day on 1 August sees the rose flag on town halls, schools and pubs from Hedon to Hunmanby, often beside the plain white rose. Through the year it goes up for the Driffield Show in July, the largest one-day show in the country, Beverley Races and the Beverley Folk Festival, Hull City at the MKM Stadium and Hull FC and Hull KR at either end of the city, Bridlington harbour and the Bridlington regatta, Hornsea and Withernsea on the seafront, the Humber Bridge and the Hull marina, Flamborough Head and the Bempton cliffs, Spurn Point and the Humber lightship, Burton Agnes and Sledmere, the Pocklington and Howden shows, Beverley Minster and the Westwood, the Wolds Way and the Hudson Way, and on garden poles in Cottingham, Hessle and Market Weighton for jubilees and coronations. The historic Riding includes Hull itself, so the rose on blue and green flies on both sides of the city boundary. The events calendar keeps the dates.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The flag comes in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall, a cobble at Bridlington or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a caravan, and 8ft x 5ft for a racecourse, a minster green or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade that does a show day or the 1st of August; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and double stitching for a Holderness or clifftop pole that takes the North Sea wind all year. Both have eyelets, and the DuraFlag is also offered with rope and toggle for a halyard.

East Riding bunting

East Riding bunting repeats the rose on blue and green on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a bar, a caravan awning or a classroom, nine metres runs along a village hall, a cricket pavilion or a seafront kiosk, and strings joined end to end will cross Saturday Market in Beverley or the high street in Driffield for the show.

Hand flags and table flags

East Riding hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for a parade, a school or the showground at Driffield. On the desk there is the East Riding table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and a satin table flag for a council chamber, a mayor’s parlour or a dinner. The Yorkshire white rose, the North and West Ridings and Lincolnshire are under county flags.
