The Cambridgeshire flag: three crowns over the Fens

The Cambridgeshire flag sets three gold crowns on a blue field above gold wavy lines, the crowns being the ancient arms of East Anglia carried on the county council’s shield and the waves standing for the rivers, dykes and drained Fenland that make up the north of the county. The design was chosen in a public competition and registered with the Flag Institute in 2015, and it is the flag flown from Shire Hall in Cambridge to the quays at Wisbech. That registered design is our Cambridgeshire Blue flag. The Cambridgeshire Red range puts the county design in its alternative red colouring across bunting, hand flags and table flags, which is useful for telling two teams, two stalls or two sides of a hall apart at a county event.

Where the crowns fly

The flag is out on the Backs for the May Bumps, on Midsummer Common for Strawberry Fair and the Cambridge Folk Festival at Cherry Hinton, at Ely for Eel Day and the cathedral flower festival, in Wisbech for the Rose Fair, at Whittlesey for the Straw Bear in January, along the river at St Ives and Huntingdon for the regattas and at the Abbey Stadium and London Road for Cambridge United and Peterborough United. Civic poles in Cambridge, Ely, March, Wisbech and Chatteris fly it through the year, Fenland village halls hang the bunting for the summer show and schools use the hand flags for county sports days. The events calendar keeps the dates.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The Blue flag is held in 20x12in for a hand pole, a punt or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole, a pub or a float, and 8ft x 5ft for a college, a council building or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for the Bumps, the fair and the show; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems for a pole out on the Fens, where there is nothing between it and the wind off the Wash. Both come with eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be supplied with rope and toggle for a halyard.

Cambridgeshire bunting

Cambridgeshire Blue bunting carries the crowns and waves on each rectangular pennant in 3m and 9m lengths, and the Cambridgeshire Red bunting comes in the same two lengths. A 3m run dresses a college stall or a shop door, 9m runs a village hall or a boathouse balcony, and several lengths tied end to end cross a market square for the fair.

Hand flags and table flags

Cambridgeshire Blue hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for the river bank and the parade, with the Red hand flags alongside. For the desk there is the Cambridgeshire table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a college dinner or a reception, each also in the Red colouring. Huntingdonshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Lincolnshire are under county flags.

Cambridgeshire flag FAQs

What is on the Cambridgeshire flag?

Three gold crowns, the ancient arms of East Anglia, on a blue field above gold wavy lines for the rivers and the Fens. It was chosen by public competition and registered with the Flag Institute in 2015.

What is the difference between Cambridgeshire Blue and Cambridgeshire Red?

Blue is the registered county flag. Red is the same county design in an alternative red colouring, stocked as bunting, hand flags and table flags for displays that need a second colour.

Does Huntingdonshire have its own flag?

Yes. Huntingdonshire is a historic county in its own right with a registered flag, and it has its own collection; the Cambridgeshire flag covers Cambridge, Ely, the Fens and the rest of the county.

Which size for a college or garden pole?

The 5ft x 3ft is the size for a 6m garden or telescopic pole, with 3ft x 2ft for anything shorter and 8ft x 5ft for a fixed pole of 20ft or more. Choose DuraFlag for a pole in the open on the Fens.

Can I fly it on a punt or a boat?

The 20x12in size on a short pole is the one for a punt, a narrowboat or a rowing-club launch.

Is Cambridgeshire bunting available?

Yes, rectangular bunting in 3m and 9m lengths in both the Blue and the Red colouring.

How fast will Cambridgeshire flags arrive?

Everything is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse; order before 2pm and it leaves the same day with free 1–2 day UK delivery.
