The Anglesey flag: three lions and a chevron
The flag of Anglesey is a red field with a gold chevron and three gold lions, two above the chevron and one beneath it. The arms are traditionally linked to Hwfa ap Cynddelw, a twelfth-century lord of the island counted among the fifteen noble tribes of Gwynedd, and they have long served as the island’s banner, the flag that goes up across Môn on St David’s Day and at the summer show. Our Anglesey flag carries that design in both grades.
Where the lions fly
The Anglesey Show at Mona every August, the Menai Bridge and Beaumaris regattas, Holyhead and Amlwch harbours, the station at Llanfairpwll for the photographs, South Stack and its lighthouse path, the beaches at Rhosneigr, Trearddur Bay, Benllech and Newborough, the Tour de Môn sportive, rugby and football at Llangefni, holiday parks and caravans across the island, and island people in Liverpool, Cardiff and London who want a flag on the balcony for 1 March. The events calendar keeps the dates.
Sizes, grades and fittings
In Flagtex, the printed woven-polyester grade with brass eyelets, the Anglesey flag comes in 3ft x 2ft at £6.99 and 5ft x 3ft at £7.99. In DuraFlag, the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and double stitching, it comes in 20x12in at £14.99, 3ft x 2ft at £29.99 and 5ft x 3ft at £39.99, each with a rope and toggle for a halyard. Five feet by three suits a 6m pole in a seafront garden; the DuraFlag is the one that copes with salt wind off the Irish Sea all year round.
Anglesey bunting and hand flags
Anglesey bunting runs the lions and chevron along rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m strings for a café window, a carnival float or the marquee at a village show. Anglesey hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks at £5.99, sized for small hands at a school parade or a street party.
Anglesey table flags
The Anglesey table flag is a 6x4in flag on a stand from £1.98, and the Anglesey wooden table flag is 9x6in on a wooden pole and base from £2.99 for a reception desk, a bar or a council table. The Red Dragon and the cross of St David are under Wales flags, and across the Menai Strait the mainland county has its own Caernarfonshire flags hub.
