The Leicestershire flag: the fox and the cinquefoil

The Leicestershire flag is divided red over white by a zigzag line, with a white ermine-spotted cinquefoil in the red upper half and a red fox running across the white below. The cinquefoil, a five-petalled flower, has been the county’s emblem since the de Beaumont earls of Leicester carried it in the twelfth century and it still sits on the city and county arms; the fox is the badge of Leicestershire hunting country, of Leicester City and of the county cricket club, and the zigzag stands for the Charnwood hills. The design won a public vote and was registered with the Flag Institute in 2021, and it now flies from County Hall at Glenfield and at the Bosworth battlefield. That is our Leicestershire flag; the Leicestershire Old flag is the earlier council-style banner, quartered red and white with the cinquefoil, a lion, a wheatsheaf and a hunting horn, held in the same sizes for anyone who prefers the heraldic version or already flies it.

When the fox is flown

The flag goes up for the Tigers at Welford Road, for Leicester City at the King Power, for Leicestershire cricket at Grace Road and for the Download and Donington weekends in the north of the county. It flies for the Bosworth Field re-enactment each August, at Richard III’s tomb in the cathedral on the anniversary of his reburial, at the Melton Mowbray food festival and the pie and cheese fairs, at Market Harborough, Lutterworth, Loughborough and Coalville carnivals, over Bradgate Park and Beacon Hill, and on village poles across the Wolds and the Vale of Belvoir for St George’s Day and jubilees. The events calendar keeps the dates.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Both the registered flag and the Old flag are stocked in 20x12in for a hand pole, a desk or a car, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a float, and 8ft x 5ft for a rugby club, a school or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for a match day or a weekend; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and double stitching for a Charnwood pole that flies the fox all year. Both grades are eyeleted; choose rope and toggle on the DuraFlag if the pole has a halyard.

Leicestershire bunting

Leicestershire bunting carries the heraldic Old design on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a bar, a shop window or a classroom; nine metres runs along a village hall, a cricket pavilion or a pub, and several lengths tied together will span a street in Melton or Market Harborough.

Hand flags and table flags

Leicestershire hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks in the Old design for a parade, a school or the Welford Road crowd. For the desk there is the Leicestershire table flag with base at 6x4in in the registered fox design, the Old pattern table flag in the same size, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber or a dinner. Rutland, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Northamptonshire are under county flags.

Leicestershire flag FAQs

What is on the Leicestershire flag?

A white ermine cinquefoil on red above a red running fox on white, divided by a zigzag for the Charnwood hills. It was chosen by public vote and registered with the Flag Institute in 2021.

What is the difference between the Leicestershire New and Old flags?

The New flag is the registered 2021 fox and cinquefoil design. The Old flag is the earlier council-style quartered banner with the cinquefoil, lion, wheatsheaf and hunting horn; both are stocked in the same sizes.

Why a fox and a cinquefoil?

The cinquefoil was the badge of the medieval earls of Leicester and sits on the county arms; the fox is the long-standing symbol of Leicestershire, used by the football and cricket clubs.

Is the bunting in the new design?

The bunting, hand flags, wooden and satin table flags are in the heraldic Old design; the full-size flag and the table flag with base are stocked in the registered fox design.

Which size for a garden flagpole?

A 6m garden or telescopic pole takes a 5ft x 3ft. Go down to 3ft x 2ft on a short pole and up to 8ft x 5ft only on a fixed pole of 20ft or more.

Does the flag cover Leicester city?

Yes. The city and the county share the cinquefoil, and the flag is flown in Leicester as well as across the shire.

How quickly will Leicestershire flags arrive?

Everything here is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse, an hour up the A50; order before 2pm and it leaves the same day with free 1–2 day UK delivery.
