The East Sussex flag: martlets and a crown on red
The East Sussex flag puts the six gold martlets of Sussex on a red field beneath a white wavy line, with a gold Saxon crown in the top centre. It is the banner of the arms of East Sussex County Council, the authority for the eastern half of the county at Lewes: the martlets are the arms attributed to the South Saxon kingdom, the crown is for that kingdom and the wavy line is the Channel coast from Camber to Brighton. The red field is what tells it apart at a glance from the blue Sussex flag and from West Sussex’s blue and gold. It flies from County Hall in Lewes and from Hastings, Eastbourne and Rother, and our East Sussex flag is that banner in both grades and the full size range.
Sussex Day and the East Sussex year
Sussex Day on 16 June, St Richard’s feast, brings the martlets out on schools, churches and town halls from Rye to Newhaven. Through the year the flag goes up for Lewes bonfire night on 5 November, Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex, Eastbourne Borough at Priory Lane and Lewes at the Dripping Pan, Eastbourne Airbourne in August and the tennis at Devonshire Park, Hastings Jack in the Green on May Day and Hastings Pirate Day, the Battle of Hastings re-enactment at Battle in October, the Rye Bay scallop festival and the Rye arts festival, Glyndebourne, the Heathfield and Hailsham shows, the Bexhill motor festival, Herstmonceux Castle and Bodiam, the Seven Sisters, Beachy Head and the Cuckmere, Brighton Pier and the Palace Pier fireworks, and on garden poles from Crowborough to Peacehaven for jubilees and coronations. The events calendar keeps the dates.
Sizes, grades and fittings
East Sussex flags are stocked in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall, a fishing boat or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a beach hut, and 8ft x 5ft for a pier, a town hall or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for a show or the Sussex Day parade; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and double stitching for a clifftop or harbour pole that takes the south-westerlies all year. Both grades come eyeleted, and the DuraFlag is also available with rope and toggle for a halyard.
East Sussex bunting
East Sussex bunting repeats the martlets and crown on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a bar, a beach hut or a classroom, nine metres runs along a village hall, a cricket pavilion or a seafront shelter, and a few strings tied together will cross the high street in Lewes or Battle for the day.
Hand flags and table flags
East Sussex hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for the bonfire processions, a school or the seafront. On the desk there is the East Sussex table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and a satin table flag for a council chamber, a mayor’s parlour or a dinner. The plain Sussex flag, West Sussex, Kent and Surrey are under county flags.
East Sussex flag FAQs
What is on the East Sussex flag?
Six gold martlets on red below a white wavy line, with a gold Saxon crown at the top, the banner of the arms of East Sussex County Council.
How does it differ from the Sussex flag?
The Sussex flag is the six martlets on plain blue; East Sussex puts them on red with a crown and a wave, and West Sussex keeps the blue with a gold band along the top.
What does the wavy line mean?
The sea. East Sussex has the longest stretch of the Sussex coast, from Camber Sands past Hastings, Eastbourne and Newhaven to Brighton.
Does the flag cover Brighton and Hove?
Yes. Brighton and Hove has its own council but sits within the historic county of Sussex on the eastern side, and the Amex itself is at Falmer in East Sussex.
Which size for a garden flagpole?
A 5ft x 3ft fits a 6m garden or telescopic pole, 3ft x 2ft suits a shorter pole or a boat, and 8ft x 5ft needs a fixed pole of 20ft or more.
Is there East Sussex bunting?
Yes, East Sussex bunting with the martlets and crown on every pennant, in 3m and 9m lengths.
How quickly will East Sussex flags arrive?
The East Sussex range is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse; order by 2pm and it leaves the same day with free 1–2 day UK delivery.
