The Black Country flag: chain, cone and furnace red
The Black Country flag is divided by a white chain into black and red, with a white glass cone at the centre. The black is the coal and the soot of the region Elihu Burritt described as black by day and red by night, the red is the glow of the furnaces and forges, the chain is for the chainmakers of Cradley Heath who forged the anchor chains of the Titanic, and the cone is the Red House glass cone at Wordsley, the last of the great glassworks cones of Stourbridge. The flag was designed by Gracie Sheppard, a twelve-year-old schoolgirl, for a competition run by the Black Country Living Museum, and it was registered with the Flag Institute in 2012; it has flown over Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton ever since. That design is our Black Country flag, held in the full size range and both grades.
Black Country Day, 14 July
Black Country Day is 14 July, the anniversary of the Newcomen engine of 1712 that first pumped a Black Country mine, and the flag goes up that day on council buildings, pubs, schools and front gardens across the four boroughs, with the Black Country Festival running through the whole month. The rest of the year it flies at the Living Museum in Dudley, at Molineux, the Hawthorns and the Bescot, at the Dudley Canal and Tunnel, the Walsall and Wolverhampton shows, Himley Hall, the Stourbridge glass quarter and Bantock Park, and from the car windows and caravans of anyone from Tipton, Bilston, Brierley Hill or Halesowen who wants it known where they are from. The events calendar keeps the festival dates.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The flag comes in 20x12in for a hand pole, a desk or a car, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a float, and 8ft x 5ft for a stadium, a civic building or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for July or a match day; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and double stitching for a pole that flies the chain and cone all year. Both have brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be ordered roped and toggled for a halyard pole. There is also a Black Country car flag for the window and a Black Country windsock for a caravan or a garden pole.
Black Country bunting
Black Country bunting repeats the chain and cone on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths, with a giant 18.25m rectangle length for a whole street. Three metres dresses a bar, a shop or a classroom, nine metres runs along a pub frontage or a community centre, and the giant length will cross a road in Tipton or Netherton for Black Country Day.
Hand flags and table flags
Black Country hand flags come in 9x6in and a larger 18x12in on wooden sticks for the festival parade, a school or the stands. On the desk there is the Black Country table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag, the 18x12in large wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber or a club dinner. Staffordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Shropshire are under county flags.
