Panama DuraFlag

Panama's flag is made of four quarters: a white one with a blue star by the pole at the top, a red one beside it, a blue one below at the hoist and a white one with a red star in the lower fly.

Designed by the family of the first president, Manuel Amador Guerrero, it was first flown in 1903 when Panama separated from Colombia. The blue and red are said to stand for the country's two rival political parties and the white for peace between them.

It flies on Independence Day, 3 November, at Panamanian community events and at football and boxing with Panamanian competitors. Knitted polyester lets the wind pass through the weave, so the Panama DuraFlag keeps its shape and colour on a pole that stays up for months.
