A gold wyvern, the two-legged dragon of heraldry, strides across a plain red field on the Wessex flag.
Chroniclers wrote of a dragon standard borne by the West Saxon kings; the beast later became associated with Alfred the Great, and Thomas Hardy revived the name Wessex as the setting of his novels. By the twentieth century the gold wyvern on red was the accepted flag of the old kingdom, which covered Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset.
It flies at Winchester and Wimborne, at Tolpuddle and Hardy country festivals, at re-enactments and on village poles from Hampshire to Somerset.
