Tibet Flag

The Tibet flag, often called the Snow Lion flag, shows a white snow mountain beneath a golden sun whose twelve rays, alternately red and dark blue, spread across the field. Two white snow lions hold a flaming three-coloured jewel and a swirling two-coloured jewel, and a yellow border runs around three sides, leaving the fly edge open.

The design was introduced in 1916 by the 13th Dalai Lama, drawing on older military banners. Today it is flown by Tibetan communities around the world and at Buddhist and cultural events.

It is bought for Losar celebrations at the Tibetan New Year, for meditation centres and by collectors of Asian flags. The Tibet Flag is printed on woven polyester, a lightweight cloth that flies easily and folds away for the next occasion.
