The Sussex flag shows six gold martlets, the footless heraldic swallows, set three, two and one on a blue field.
Heralds of the sixteenth century gave the martlets to the old South Saxon kingdom, and the six birds are often linked to the six rapes, the historic divisions of the county. The flag was registered with the Flag Institute in 2011.
It flies on Sussex Day, 16 June, the feast of St Richard, at Brighton, Hove and Chichester, at county cricket and on the South Downs.
