The St Pierre and Miquelon flag shows a gold three-masted ship sailing on a blue field over wavy lines, with three small emblems at the hoist: the Basque flag, the ermine of Brittany and the gold leopards of Normandy.
The ship recalls Jacques Cartier, who visited the islands in 1536, and the three emblems honour the Basque, Breton and Norman settlers who fished the Grand Banks. The archipelago off Newfoundland is a French overseas collectivity, and the flag is used locally alongside the tricolour.
