The Northumbria flag is a field of vertical stripes in red and gold, the colours associated with the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria and its royal saint, Oswald.

At its height in the seventh century Northumbria stretched from the Humber to the Firth of Forth, ruled from Bamburgh and York. The gold and red stripes developed from the purple and gold banner placed over Oswald's tomb into an emblem of the whole north-east.

It is popular at Anglo-Saxon re-enactments, on Holy Island and at Bamburgh, and with people across Tyneside, Wearside, Durham and Northumberland who identify with the old kingdom. The Northumbria Flag is printed on woven polyester, a lightweight cloth that flies easily and folds away for the next occasion. Sized at 5ft x 3ft, the Northumbria Flag is the most common flag size in the UK and fits a typical 6m pole.
