The Northern Territory flag is divided vertically: a black band at the hoist carries the five white stars of the Southern Cross, and a wider ochre band in the fly carries Sturt's desert rose, a stylised seven-petalled white flower with a black star at its centre.

Designed by Robert Ingpen and first raised on 1 July 1978, when the territory gained self-government, it uses the colours of the Outback, and the desert rose is the territory's floral emblem.

Australians fly it on Territory Day, 1 July, for the AFL and for Darwin and Alice Springs connections, and it completes a set of Australian state and territory flags. Woven polyester keeps the Northern Territory Flag light enough to fly in a gentle breeze while holding bright colours.
