North Carolina's flag has a blue vertical bar at the hoist carrying a white star between the gold letters N and C, and two horizontal bars, red over white, across the fly. Gold scrolls above and below the star bear the dates 20 May 1775 and 12 April 1776.

The design was adopted in 1885. The dates recall the Mecklenburg Declaration and the Halifax Resolves, by which North Carolina became the first colony to authorise its delegates to vote for independence from Britain.

It is bought for American-themed bars and diners, by NASCAR and basketball fans and by people with family in Charlotte, Raleigh or the Outer Banks. The North Carolina Flag is printed on woven polyester, a lightweight cloth that flies easily and folds away for the next occasion.
