The North Rhine-Westphalia flag has three horizontal bands of green, white and red.

The state was formed under the British military government in 1946 from the northern Rhine Province and Westphalia, with Lippe joining in 1947, and its colours combine the green and white of the Rhineland with the red and white of Westphalia. Its arms show the Rhine as a wavy line, the white horse of Westphalia and the rose of Lippe.

It suits supporters of Cologne, Dortmund, Schalke, Gladbach and Leverkusen, visitors to the Christmas markets and anyone with family in the Ruhr.
