Malta Civil Ensign DuraFlag

The Malta Civil Ensign is a red field with a white Maltese cross, edged in red, at its centre, rather than the white and red halves of the national flag.

It is the ensign for Maltese-registered merchant ships and pleasure craft, and it uses the eight-pointed cross of the Knights of St John, who ruled Malta from 1530 to 1798. The eight points are traditionally linked with the eight beatitudes.

Owners of Maltese-flagged boats fly it at sea, and it is popular with Maltese communities and at Mediterranean-themed events ashore. Knitted polyester lets the wind pass through the weave, so the Malta Civil Ensign DuraFlag keeps its shape and colour on a pole that stays up for months.
