This is the short-lived Malawi flag of 2010 to 2012: horizontal stripes of red, black and green with a complete white sun of 45 rays in the centre.

Introduced by President Bingu wa Mutharika in July 2010, the redesign moved the black stripe to the middle and replaced the red rising sun with a full white one, said to show economic progress since independence. It proved unpopular and parliament restored the original 1964 flag in May 2012, which makes this version a collector's piece.

Collectors of superseded flags and anyone documenting African flag history buy it, usually for display rather than for everyday flying. The Malawi 2010-2012 Flag is printed on woven polyester, a lightweight cloth that flies easily and folds away for the next occasion.
