Uruguay DuraFlag

Five white and four blue stripes run across Uruguay's flag, and a white canton holds the Sun of May, a golden sun with a face and sixteen rays, straight and wavy in turn.

Adopted in 1828 and modified in 1830, the stripes stand for the nine original departments, and the Sun of May recalls the May Revolution of 1810 in Buenos Aires.

Fans of La Celeste fly it at World Cups and the Copa América, and Uruguayan communities raise it on Independence Day, 25 August. Knitted polyester lets the wind pass through the weave, so the Uruguay DuraFlag keeps its shape and colour on a pole that stays up for months.
