The United Nations flag is a light blue field with the UN emblem in white: a map of the world seen from above the North Pole, framed by two olive branches.

Adopted in 1947, the map is an azimuthal equidistant projection centred on the North Pole, and the olive branches symbolise peace.

Schools, model UN conferences, councils and charities fly it on United Nations Day, 24 October, and at international events. Knitted polyester lets the wind pass through the weave, so the United Nations DuraFlag keeps its shape and colour on a pole that stays up for months.
