Madeira DuraFlag

The Madeira DuraFlag is a vertical triband of blue, gold and blue, the gold band twice the width of each blue one. In the centre of the gold stands the Cross of the Order of Christ, red edged with white.

Adopted in 1978 for the Autonomous Region, the blue stands for the Atlantic and the gold for the islands' sunshine. The cross recalls the Portuguese navigators who settled Madeira from 1419 under Prince Henry, master of the Order of Christ.

It goes up on Madeira Day, 1 July, at Portuguese community festas and Madeiran restaurants, and with Marítimo and Nacional fans on match days.
