Northern Ireland flags: the Ulster Banner explained

The flag most people mean by “Northern Ireland flag” is the Ulster Banner: a red St George’s cross on white, with a six-pointed star at the centre carrying the Red Hand of Ulster and topped by a crown. It was the banner of the Government of Northern Ireland from 1953 until that government was dissolved in 1972, and although it has had no official status since, it remains the flag flown by Northern Ireland supporters at football, Commonwealth Games and golf events, and the one you will see on bunting across the Province every July. The six points of the star stand for the six counties; the crown marks the link to the Crown. Our Northern Ireland flag has the six-pointed star correctly centred on the cross, which cheaper flags frequently get wrong.

The St Patrick’s Cross flag (a red saltire on white) is the other design in this collection. It is the cross that represents Ireland within the Union Flag and is used by several institutions and regimental associations as a neutral Irish emblem. For the historic nine-county province, see the Ulster flag with its gold field and red cross, and for the football terraces the Our Wee Country flag.

When Northern Ireland flags are flown

Demand peaks in the run-up to the Twelfth of July, when streets, lamp posts and halls across Ulster are dressed for the parades, and again for Ulster Day on 28 September. Add Northern Ireland away days at Windsor Park, the Commonwealth Games and Royal Portrush golf weeks, and it pays to order early in June rather than the week before.

Sizes and which to choose

5ft x 3ft is the all-round size: it suits a 20ft telescopic pole, a wall bracket on a house or a pub frontage. 3ft x 2ft is right for shorter 10–12ft poles, indoor display and bedroom walls, while 8ft x 5ft is the size for club flagpoles, gable ends and anywhere the flag has to read from the other side of a road. Every size comes with metal eyelets as standard; rope and toggle is available on the DuraFlag grade.

Flagtex, Flagtex Nylon or DuraFlag?

Flagtex is our budget woven polyester, printed through so the design shows on both sides — ideal for parades, the Twelfth and anything flown for a few weeks a year. Flagtex Nylon is the mid grade: a tighter, brighter cloth with a quadruple-stitched fly end that holds its colour across a full season. The DuraFlag Northern Ireland flag is the permanent-pole option: 150gsm knitted polyester, double-stitched hems with a reinforced header, UV-stable inks and your choice of rope and toggle or clips. The same cloth is used for the Northern Ireland Ensign DuraFlag, a blue ensign with the Ulster Banner in the fly.

Northern Ireland bunting

Northern Ireland bunting is cut from the same weatherproof polyester as the flags, stitched to a strong tape and sold by the length, so a whole street can be dressed by joining a few runs. Triangle pennants give the classic parade look; rectangle flags show the full Ulster Banner on every pennant. St Patrick’s Cross bunting pairs well with it for church halls and regimental dinners.

Hand flags, table flags and windsocks

Northern Ireland hand flags come mounted on wooden sticks in single and multi-pack quantities for parades, schools and supporters’ clubs; St Patrick’s Cross hand flags are made the same way. The Northern Ireland table flag with base suits reception desks, Orange lodges and council functions, and the Northern Ireland windsock adds movement to a garden or caravan pitch.

Northern Ireland flag FAQs

Is the Ulster Banner the official flag of Northern Ireland?

No. Northern Ireland has had no official flag of its own since 1973; the Union Flag is the official flag. The Ulster Banner is used unofficially by sporting bodies and supporters, and it is the design on our Northern Ireland flag.

What is the difference between the Ulster Banner and the Ulster flag?

The Ulster Banner has a white field with a red cross, star and crown and represents the six counties of Northern Ireland. The Ulster flag has a gold field with a red cross and a Red Hand on a white shield, with no crown, and represents the historic nine-county province.

Which size flag fits a 20ft telescopic pole?

5ft x 3ft. A 3ft x 2ft looks small on a 20ft pole, and an 8ft x 5ft puts too much load on it in wind. Save 8ft x 5ft for fixed poles of 25ft or more.

Can I fly a Northern Ireland flag at home?

Yes. In the UK, national and regional flags can be flown from a house or garden pole without advertising consent, although some councils have rules on the pole itself, so check before fitting a permanent one.

Do you make Northern Ireland bunting in long lengths?

Yes. Pick the length you need on the product page; whole streets are normally dressed by tying two or more lengths end to end along the tape.

How should I wash a polyester flag?

Hand wash or use a cool machine cycle with no bleach, then dry flat or on the line. Do not tumble dry, and iron only on a cool setting through a cloth.
