Papua New Guinea DuraFlag

Papua New Guinea's flag is split diagonally from the upper hoist to the lower fly: red above with a gold bird of paradise in flight, and black below with the five white stars of the Southern Cross.

It was designed by Susan Karike, a fifteen-year-old schoolgirl, and adopted in 1971 ahead of independence from Australia in 1975. Red and black appear widely in the art of the country's many peoples.

PNG communities fly it on Independence Day, 16 September, and it is popular with rugby league fans following the Kumuls.
