Malawi (Current) DuraFlag

Black, red and green run across Malawi's flag in three horizontal bands, and a red sun with 31 rays rises from the lower edge of the black band. This DuraFlag carries the current design, with the sun sitting on the line of the red stripe.

The flag was first raised at independence on 6 July 1964. A version with a full white sun replaced it in 2010, but the original returned in 2012. Black stands for the peoples of Africa, red for those who died for freedom and green for the land, while the 31 rays mark Malawi as the 31st African nation to become independent.

It goes up for Independence Day on 6 July, for the Flames at football and the Queens at netball, and at Malawian church and community events in the UK.
