Racing flags: the chequered flag and the marshal’s set

The chequered flag has ended motor races since at least 1906, when it was recorded at the Glidden Tour in the United States, and it is now the finish signal for everything from Formula 1 and MotoGP to the Sunday kart club and the school egg-and-spoon. Our chequered flag is a bold black and white check in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft, in Flagtex, Flagtex Nylon or DuraFlag, with eyelets or a sleeve to slide over a pole. The rest of the marshal’s set is made up from plain coloured flags in the same sizes: yellow for a hazard and no overtaking, red to stop the session, green for all clear, blue to let a faster car through, black to call a driver in, the black with orange circle for a mechanical fault, the red and yellow striped flag for oil or a slippery surface and the black and white diagonal as a warning for unsporting driving.

Track days, karting, parties and the pub

Racing flags go to kart tracks and club circuits for marshal posts and the finish line, to cycling and running clubs for the finish gantry, to schools for sports day, to garages and car dealers for a forecourt, and to scalextric nights and racing-car birthdays, where a Racing Car flag and a run of chequered bunting do the decorating. Pubs put chequered bunting up for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in July, the Isle of Man TT in June and the Le Mans weekend, and VW owners’ clubs take VW Love and the camper-coloured VW flags to shows and meets. Club-colour check flags for football and rugby are a different thing and have their own chequered flags page.

Which size racing flag?

3ft x 2ft is close to the marshal-post size and the right flag to wave by hand from a trackside post; 5ft x 3ft is the finish-line flag, the garage wall and the pub beam; 8ft x 5ft is for a podium backdrop or a circuit flagpole; 20x12in goes on a hand pole for the kids at the kart track or a pit bike. The sleeved option slides straight over a marshal’s pole or a broom handle with no eyelets to tie.

Flagtex, nylon or DuraFlag?

Flagtex is the printed woven polyester at £6.99 for a 5ft x 3ft and the normal choice for a club’s flag set. Flagtex Nylon is lighter and waves with less effort, which marshals on a long session appreciate. DuraFlag is the 150gsm knitted grade with double-stitched hems for a chequered flag left on a circuit or dealership flagpole all season. All of it is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse, same day on orders before 2pm.

Chequered bunting

Chequered bunting comes in rectangle lengths of 3m, 5m, 9m, 12m and 20m, a triangle cut, and a giant 18.25m length with oversized pennants for a garage forecourt or a paddock entrance, all on weatherproof polyester sewn to a strong tape. Red and white check, green and white check and plain colour bunting in 3m and 9m mix in for a pit-lane look.

Hand flags, windsocks and table flags

Chequered hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for the finish line of a fun run or a party game, with plain coloured hand flags for the marshal colours at a school sports day. The chequered windsock flies from a campsite pole at a race weekend, and the chequered table flag with base is the 6x4in desk flag for a dealership, a trophy table or a Grand Prix party.

Racing flag FAQs

What do the different racing flags mean?

Chequered ends the race; yellow is a hazard ahead, slow down and no overtaking; red stops the session; green is all clear; blue tells a driver to let a faster car past; black calls a driver into the pits; black with an orange disc means a mechanical problem; red and yellow stripes warn of oil or debris; and the black and white diagonal is a warning for unsporting behaviour.

What size is a marshal’s flag?

Circuit flags are typically around 60cm by 80cm, so a 3ft x 2ft flag on a sleeve or a short pole is the closest stock size. 5ft x 3ft is better for the finish-line chequered flag where it needs to be seen from a distance.

Can I get a chequered flag with a sleeve instead of eyelets?

Yes. The chequered flag and the plain coloured flags have a sleeved option that slides over a pole, which is the usual choice for a hand-waved marshal flag.

Do you sell a full marshal flag set?

Not as a boxed kit, but every colour in the set is listed here in matching sizes, so a club can order the chequered, yellow, red, green, blue, black, black-and-orange, striped and diagonal flags together in one basket.

How long is the chequered bunting?

From 3m to 20m in rectangle cut, with a triangle version and a giant 18.25m length. A 9m run covers a garage frontage; 20m goes along a pit wall or across a car park.

Which flag for a racing-car birthday party?

A 5ft x 3ft chequered flag for the wall, a 9m length of chequered bunting for the room and 9x6in chequered hand flags for the children to wave at the finish of the party games.
