Donegal colours: green and gold

Donegal, Tír Chonaill, is the far north-west corner of Ireland and the most Ulster of the Republic’s counties, and its football team in green and gold has given the county its two All-Ireland titles, 1992 under Brian McEniff and 2012 under Jim McGuinness, plus a string of Ulster championships that fill MacCumhaill Park in Ballybofey and the Donegal end of Clones every summer. The Green and Gold Irish county flag is the supporters’ version of those colours, a vertical half of green and a half of gold with no crest, and it is stocked in more sizes than most county flags: 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft in Flagtex woven polyester from £6.99, and in the same sizes as a 150gsm DuraFlag with clips or rope and toggle up to £39.99 for a pole that flies the colours from Letterkenny to Glasgow all year.

The Donegal DuraFlag

The Donegal DuraFlag is the county’s own crest design in knitted polyester, 20x12in at £14.99 and 5ft x 3ft at £39.99, with double-stitched hems and a choice of clips or rope and toggle. It goes on the pole outside a Donegal association club in Britain, a Bundoran guesthouse, a Gweedore pub or a boat in Killybegs, and it is the flag to send to a relative in Boston or Sydney who wants the county rather than the colours alone.

Bunting and hand flags

Green and yellow triangle bunting in 5m, 12m and 20m from £11.99 strings the colours along a street in Ballyshannon, a club bar or a front garden for an Ulster final week or a homecoming. Green and gold hand flags on wooden sticks at £7.99 are for the bus to Clones, the schoolyard and the children on the wall at Ballybofey. Tyrone, Derry and the other Ulster counties are under Irish county flags, the Irish flags hub holds the tricolour and the Ulster provincial flag, and the county DuraFlags are gathered under Irish county colours DuraFlags.

Donegal flag FAQs

What colours does Donegal play in?

Green and gold. The Green and Gold Irish county flag is the plain two-colour supporters’ flag, and the Donegal DuraFlag carries the county’s own crest.

What sizes is the green and gold flag stocked in?

20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft in Flagtex, with a DuraFlag option in the same sizes for daily flying.

Is this the same flag as Kerry’s?

Kerry also play in green and gold and the plain two-colour flag serves both counties. The Donegal DuraFlag and the Kerry DuraFlag are the county-specific designs.

Which Donegal flag for a flagpole outside a club?

The Donegal DuraFlag or the green and gold DuraFlag in 5ft x 3ft with clips or rope and toggle; the knitted grade and stitched hems take the Atlantic wind.

When do Donegal flags go up?

From the Ulster championship in May through an All-Ireland run in July, for homecomings, and all year outside Donegal bars and clubs in Britain and America.
