Union Jack flags: history, proportions and the right way up
The Union Jack, or Union Flag, combines the three crosses of the United Kingdom: the red cross of St George for England, the white saltire of St Andrew for Scotland and the red saltire of St Patrick for Ireland. The first union flag was ordered by James VI and I in 1606 after the union of the Scottish and English crowns, and St Patrick’s saltire was added on 1 January 1801 when the Act of Union brought Ireland into the United Kingdom, giving the design flown today. The standard proportion is 1:2, and the flag has a correct way up: the broad white diagonal sits above the red at the hoist, in the top-left corner nearest the pole. Every Union Jack flag we sell follows the official geometry, so the counterchanged saltires fall in the right places — something a surprising number of cheap flags get wrong.
When the Union Jack is flown
Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day in November, the Coronation anniversary on 6 May, the King’s official birthday and Trooping the Colour in June, VE Day on 8 May and Commonwealth Day in March are the fixed points in the calendar. Street parties, jubilees, royal weddings, the Olympics, Wimbledon and the Last Night of the Proms add to it, and British pubs abroad and expat clubs keep a flag up all year.
Union Jack sizes
5ft x 3ft is the size that fits a 20ft telescopic garden pole, a house bracket or a pub frontage. 3ft x 2ft is right for short poles, indoor display and children’s rooms; 8ft x 5ft is for commercial poles, gable ends and anywhere the flag has to carry across a road. Traditional yard sizes from half a yard to three yards are also cut for yachts, bowling clubs and ceremonial poles, and clips or rope and toggle are available on the DuraFlag grade.
Flagtex, Flagtex Nylon or DuraFlag?
Flagtex is the budget woven polyester that street parties and fan zones buy by the box. Flagtex Nylon is the middle grade, a denser weave with a quadruple-stitched fly end that keeps its colour through a season outside. The DuraFlag Union Jack is the flag we supply to schools, councils and hotels for daily flying: 150gsm knitted polyester, double-stitched hems, a reinforced header and inks rated for years of UV, finished with rope and toggle or clips.
Union Jack bunting
Union Jack bunting is printed on weatherproof polyester and sewn to a strong tape so it can stay up from VE Day to the end of the summer. Pick triangle pennants for a street-party look or rectangles that show the full flag. Union Jack crest bunting and rainbow Union Jack bunting cover regimental dinners and Pride events.
Hand flags, table flags, car flags and windsocks
Union Jack hand flags on wooden sticks come singly and in multi-packs for parades, schools and homecomings. The Union Jack table flag with base dresses a reception, boardroom or citizenship ceremony; the Union Jack car flag clips to a window for match days and motorcades; the Union Jack windsock flies from any garden pole; and the Union Jack bandana is for the festival crowd.
Union Jack colourways and variants
Beyond the standard red, white and blue there is a Union Jack crest flag, a paint splash and a grunge version, the rainbow Union Jack, and single-colour Jacks in pink, black, red, green, royal blue, sky blue and navy, plus two-tone club colours such as claret and sky blue. The Thin Blue Line Union Jack and the DuraFlag thin red, green, grey, orange, white and yellow line flags honour the emergency and armed services.
British flags beyond the Union Jack
The Union Jack heads our British flags range. The home nations pages cover the St George’s Cross, the Saltire, the Welsh Dragon and the Ulster Banner; British historical flags hold ensigns and earlier unions; and British county flags run from Cornwall and Yorkshire to Aberdeenshire and Anglesey, with Birmingham and the Black Country for the West Midlands. Regimental, naval and RAF designs sit under military flags.
Union Jack FAQs
Which way up does the Union Jack go?
At the top corner nearest the pole, the broad white band of St Andrew’s saltire should sit above the thin red St Patrick’s stripe. If the broad white is below the red at the hoist, the flag is upside down.
Is it the Union Jack or the Union Flag?
Both are correct. The Flag Institute and Parliament accept Union Jack for the flag wherever it is flown; the name “jack” came from its use at the bow of Royal Navy ships.
What size Union Jack for a 20ft telescopic pole?
5ft x 3ft. Go to 8ft x 5ft only on a fixed pole of 25ft or more; on a telescopic pole it puts too much load on the upper sections in wind.
Can I fly the Union Jack at home without permission?
Yes. National flags need no advertising consent in the UK, and a single vertical flagpole in a garden is normally allowed without planning permission, though listed buildings and conservation areas can have extra rules.
Do your Union Jacks have the St Patrick’s cross offset correctly?
Yes. The red saltire is counterchanged, sitting towards the lower edge of each white arm on the hoist side and the upper edge on the fly side, exactly as the official design specifies.
How do I wash a Union Jack flag?
Cool hand or machine wash, no bleach, line dry. Never tumble dry a printed polyester flag, and iron only on a low heat through a cloth if it has creased in storage.
What is the difference between Flagtex and DuraFlag?
Flagtex is a lighter printed polyester for occasional use; DuraFlag is a heavier knitted polyester with double-stitched hems and a reinforced header for permanent poles. Both are held in UK stock for same-day dispatch.
