What makes a pirate DuraFlag different
DuraFlag is the heavyweight grade: 150gsm knitted polyester instead of the lighter woven cloth of a standard printed flag, so the skull stays crisp after a season of wind rather than fraying at the fly end. Each flag has a double-stitched hem on all four sides, a reinforced white header band at the hoist, and a choice of two fittings: plastic clips that snap straight onto the rings of a telescopic pole, or a rope and toggle for a traditional halyard on a wooden or steel mast. The dye is pressed through the knit so the design shows the correct way round on both faces, which matters for a Jolly Roger seen from the road and the garden at the same time. Every design on this page is the DuraFlag version only; the same artwork in the standard Flagtex grade, with party bunting and hand flags to match, lives on the main pirate flags page.
Eleven designs
The Skull and Crossbones DuraFlag is the classic Jolly Roger and the only one of the eleven stocked in three sizes, 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft and 5ft x 3ft. The two captains’ flags are Jack Rackham, the skull over crossed cutlasses that Calico Jack flew in the Caribbean in 1720, and the One Eyed Jack with its eyepatch and bandana. Crossed Sabres is the plain naval version without a skull. For the garden bar there are This Bar Is Open, Time Flies When You Have Rum and Have A Nice Day Matey; for the kids’ den the Pirate Bandana, Pirate Night Sky and Pirate Treasure Beach scenes; and the Pink Pirate for a hen weekend or a daughter’s treehouse.
Where a heavyweight pirate flag earns its keep
The DuraFlag grade is for a flag that is going to be left up: the mast on a narrowboat or a yacht that lives on its mooring, the pole outside a beach bar, a holiday-park clubhouse or a pub garden, a sailing club or sea cadet unit, a campsite that flies a Jolly Roger all summer, and a garden pole in an exposed spot where a lighter flag would be in shreds by October. It is also the grade for a flag that is washed and re-used every year for a Talk Like a Pirate Day on 19 September, a pirate-themed festival weekend or an annual regatta.
Sizes and fittings
5ft x 3ft is the pole size for a garden, a boat or a bar, in clips or rope and toggle; 3ft x 2ft (Skull and Crossbones only) suits a dinghy, a campervan pole or a short mast; 20x12in is the hand-pole and kayak size. Prices run from £14.99 for the smallest to £39.99 for the 5ft x 3ft with a rope and toggle. All eleven are stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse with same-day dispatch before 2pm, and a matching telescopic or wall-mounted pole can go in the same parcel.
Bunting, hand flags and the standard grade
Bunting and hand flags are not made in the DuraFlag grade, so for a party run of skull and crossbones pennants, pirate hand flags for the crew or the lighter Flagtex version of these designs at £6.99, go to the main pirate flags collection. The rest of the heavyweight range, from county flags to the nautical and novelty sets, is under DuraFlags.
Pirate DuraFlag FAQs
What is a DuraFlag?
DuraFlag is our heavyweight outdoor grade: 150gsm knitted polyester with a double-stitched hem on every edge, a reinforced header and a choice of clip or rope-and-toggle fittings. It is built for a flag that stays on the pole rather than one that goes up for a party.
How long will a pirate DuraFlag last outside?
Flown every day in a normal British garden a DuraFlag should give a year or more before the fly end starts to wear, against a few months for a standard printed flag. Taking it down in gales and bringing it in over winter extends that considerably.
Clips or rope and toggle?
Clips if your pole has rings or a halyard with snap hooks, which covers every telescopic pole we sell. Rope and toggle if you have a traditional wooden or steel flagpole with a continuous halyard and a toggle loop at the top.
Is the skull printed on both sides?
Yes. The design is pressed through the knitted polyester so it reads correctly from either face, with the skull facing the right way on the front and a mirror image on the back as with every single-ply flag.
Which sizes are available?
Every design comes in 20x12in and 5ft x 3ft, and the Skull and Crossbones DuraFlag also in 3ft x 2ft. There is no 8ft x 5ft pirate DuraFlag at present.
Can I get pirate bunting in DuraFlag?
No, bunting and hand flags are only made in the standard grade. The pirate flags page has skull and crossbones bunting in rectangle and triangle cuts up to 20m, plus wooden-stick hand flags.
