Festival flags: how to find your tent
The festival flag has one job and does it well: it marks your pitch from across a field of ten thousand identical tents, so that your mates can find you after the headliner and you can find your sleeping bag after the silent disco. The habit took off at Glastonbury in the 1990s when the site grew too big to navigate by landmarks, and it is now part of the furniture at Download, Reading and Leeds, Boomtown, Kendal Calling, Creamfields, Latitude, Green Man, Bestival and the Isle of Wight, as well as every campsite, beach party, scout camp and stag weekend in between. The rule is simple: the flag goes up before the tent does, it should be visible from the main drag, and it should be something nobody else in your field has brought.
Choosing a design
The Smiley Face Acid flag has been the festival flag since the second summer of love and still is; the plain smiley, pink smiley and rainbow smiley sit beside it, along with the smiley-face country flags for a mixed crew. The rainbow flag, eight-stripe original, rainbow peace and rainbow Union Jack are visible from the furthest campsite, and the Peace, Love and Happiness, CND and Love Is Love flags say what the weekend is for. The metal and rock crowd take the skull and crossbones, the skull with fire, the red skull and the rest of the pirate range; the campervan field takes the VW flags and the peace camper van; the reggae stage takes Bob Marley One Love, Ethiopia with Lion and the cannabis reggae and marijuana leaf designs; and the beer, cold beer and It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere flags mark the bar tent. A rainbow unicorn, a magic mushroom, a sugar skull or a dreamcatcher covers the rest, and a plain coloured flag in a choice of colours is the blank canvas for fabric paint and a stencil.
Sizes and the pole to fly it on
Most festival flags are 5ft x 3ft on Flagtex woven polyester, the size that shows from 200 metres on a 6m pole without catching so much wind that it pulls the pole over. The best-sellers also come in 3ft x 2ft for a shorter pole or a tent-side display, 20x12in for a hand pole or a car, and 8ft x 5ft for a sound-system rig or a campervan with a roof pole; a handful, including the acid smiley, the rainbow and the peace flag, are available in the heavier DuraFlag grade for a flag that goes to every festival for years. Every flag has brass eyelets, so it cable-ties to a tent pole or clips to the rings on a telescopic pole. The telescopic flag poles collapse to a fraction of their height, weigh very little and push into soft ground with a ground spike; take a guy rope for a windy site, because the flag at the top is a sail.
Windsocks, bunting and car flags
A windsock marks a pitch as well as a flag and moves even in a light breeze: the acid smiley windsock, 5 O’Clock Somewhere windsock and the VW Love windsocks hang from the same pole. Rainbow bunting and plain-colour bunting dress a gazebo or a campervan awning, and the Peace and Love rainbow car flag gets the car found in the car park as well. Festival organisers, bars and stages wanting their own design can order a custom printed flag.
Festival flag FAQs
What size flag is best for a festival tent?
5ft x 3ft on a 5m or 6m telescopic pole. It is big enough to spot from across the field and light enough that the pole stays up in a breeze; 3ft x 2ft suits a shorter pole or a smaller camp.
Are flags allowed at Glastonbury and other festivals?
Flags are welcome in the campsites at every major UK festival. Most now ask you not to take flags on poles into the arena or in front of the stages, so leave the pole at the tent and bring a hand flag to the show.
What pole do I need for a festival flag?
A telescopic flag pole with a ground spike; 5m or 6m is the usual festival height. It collapses to carry in, pushes into grass without tools and takes a 5ft x 3ft flag on clips or cable ties through the eyelets.
Can I paint or write on a plain flag?
Yes. The plain coloured flags are woven polyester, which takes fabric paint, marker pen and iron-on letters well. Let it dry fully before it goes up so the design does not run in the rain.
Will the flag survive a wet weekend?
The polyester is weatherproof and the print goes through the cloth, so rain does not wash it out. Dry it before storing and it will do several summers; DuraFlag versions last longer still.
Do you sell windsocks for a campsite pitch?
Yes, acid smiley, 5 O’Clock Somewhere and VW Love windsocks are on this page and fly from the same pole as a flag.
How quickly can a festival flag arrive before the weekend?
Every flag, windsock and length of bunting here is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse; order before 2pm and it ships the same day with free 1–2 day UK delivery, so a Wednesday order is packed by Friday.
